8005 Group.jpg (122336 bytes) #8005 Palladium-Core Swirl - Experimental
1.76"
Signed AF 2008 EXP
$125

An experiment using palladium flakes instead of mica on a clear core.  There are also stripes of transparent lime green and transparent aqua over some of the flakes to see if it would make colorful sparkles as well as silver ones.

8016 Group.jpg (73670 bytes) #8016 Controlled Chaos - Experimental
1.57"
Signed AF 2008 EXP
$125 SOLD

This was an experiment in both color and pattern for my upcoming "Controlled Chaos" series.

8036 Group.jpg (55378 bytes) #8036 Silver Glass Chevron - Experimental
0.9"
Signed AF 2008 EXP

The core of this experiment is a combination of white, cobalt blue, and clear glass that contains silver.  The reaction of the chemicals causes the yellows and greenish blues.  It's very pretty and has very precise swirls.

7064_Group.jpg (110947 bytes) #7064 Rainbow Back Twist
1.75"
Signed AF 2007  3
$125 SOLD

Traditionally, marbles with multiple colored stripes are referred to as "Joseph's Coats" in reference to the "richly ornamented" robe Israel gave his son Joseph [Gen. 37:3].  This particular design is my own interpretation and it has more intended meaning.

The rainbow colors are a reminder of God's covenant with all life on earth [Gen. 9:17] and the white stripes between the rainbow colors signify Jesus, the light of the world [John 8:12] shining through.  The stripes themselves signify our faith journey.  In the middle there is a large backward twist in the stripes signifying that the journey is long and filled with many obstacles, or back-steps that must be overcome.  And finally, the poles, or ends, signify God - there at the beginning and at the end - all things coming from Him and going to Him.

The marble is encased in a thick layer of crystal clear.

8056 Group.jpg (99529 bytes) #8056 Veiled Core Chevron - Experimental
1.80"
Signed AF 2008 EXP
$125

This was a test of two new types of glass that I just got.  The core is a milky aqua that is beautiful.  Over that, but under the colored stripes, there are wispy layers of white "veil" glass.   The effect is very intriguing and I'll be trying more of both in the future.

"TECHNICAL STUDY" or "TEST SKETCH" MARBLES

When I need to figure out a process, how to achieve a "look," or to make the glass do what I'm thinking, I often do a quick technical study.  I think of it in terms of a painter having a sketchbook.  When they have ideas, they draw or paint them in the sketchbook.  Well, when I have ideas that I want to quickly try out I make "test sketch" marbles.  They're typically one-inch or smaller because it's much faster to work in that size range.  However, if a technique doesn't lend itself to working that small, or if I have a vision of what I want, but it needs to be worked out in the larger format, I do "technical studies" to work out the technique.

Often these studies fail during the process and what remains of the marble is destroyed by dumping it in my water bucket while it's hot.  Sometimes however, the test works and makes it into the annealer.  In the past, the "TS" marbles would sit in a bin on my workbench where I would refer to them periodically for inspiration, again like a painter looking through their sketchbook.  Each one has a lesson for me and was a specific attempt at a new or evolving technique or style.

8015 Group.jpg (66965 bytes) #8015
1.64"
Signed AF 2008 TS
$100

This marble was the second technical study for the "Controlled Chaos" style.  I was testing to see whether or not I could introduce different colors and still achieve and control the necessary reaction..

8034 Group.jpg (70298 bytes) #8034
1.48"
Signed AF 2008 TS
$75 SOLD

This marble was exploring two different techniques.  The first was how to make a milky-translucent core using a combination of transparent amber and a new white "veil" glass that I got.  The second was to explore the process of using "laminated" stripes.  These are stripes that are opaque on the inside and transparent color (or colors) on the outside.  The stripes turned out beautifully.  The core color is very pretty and it did turn out translucent (which is hard to tell in this photo), but it isn't quite as translucent as I was hoping for.
